EARLY BYZANTINE BAPTISTERY
The archaeological site, extending between Mackenzie King, Pavlou Mela, and Iktinou streets at a level 5.00 meters lower, includes a baptistery from the early Byzantine period (4th/5th century) and underground twin cisterns, which during the Byzantine era were converted into a place of worship, known today as the “Agiasma” (Holy Water). It includes a baptistery dating back to the early Byzantine period, belonging to the complex of the 5th-century episcopal basilica, upon whose ruins the Byzantine Church of Hagia Sophia was built.
