At the archaeological site between Mackenzie King, Pavlou Mela and Iktinou streets a baptistery of the early Byzantine period (4th / 5th century) is preserved, along with two underground cisterns. The latter were converted into a holy place in Byzantine times, known today as “Ηαgiasma”. The baptistery was part of the 5th century episcopal basilica complex, over the ruins of which the Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia was built.
